My Story

How it all began…

Noma Noha Akugue grew up in Glinde, a small suburb of Hamburg. At the young age of three, Noma’s father, Roland, took her to her first tennis lesson. Since then, the lefty can barely let go of her racket.

Soon, the young girl transformed into a disciplined and competitive athlete

Comeback 2022

After a prolonged shoulder injury prevented her from competing in tournaments for nearly half a year, Noma returned to the ITF Tour in early 2022. In February she had her comeback debut in Altenkirchen, Germany (ITF $60,000). With two impressive wins against Ekaterina Makarova (6-2 6-3) and Italy's Stefania Rubini (6-3 6-2), Noma advanced to the main draw where she was defeated by Japanese Yuriko Lily Miyazaki 4-6 2-6.

After a successful run on clay, Noma then returned to the bett1open (WTA 500) in Berlin in June to gain further experience on grass. But former top-20 player, Daria Saville of Australia, dominated and moved into the second round after defeating Noma 7-5 6-4.

After three more clay court tournaments in Ystad, Sweden (ITF $25,000), Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Germany (ITF $25,000) and Versmold , Germany(ITF $25,000), Noma received a wildcard for the qualifying round of the Hamburg European Open (WTA 250) for the second time.

In front of her home crowd, she won the nerve-racking battle in the first round against the American, Grace Min, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1). Shortly thereafter, however, she dropped against Oksana Selekhmeteva with 2-6 2-6 in the second round.

After a sensational week, Noma was only beaten by Arantxa Rus (0:6, 6:7 (3:7)) at the WTA 250 tournament at Rothenbaum. Nevertheless, it was a true tennis fairytale. As number 207 in the world rankings, she had started the tournament with a wild card. She fought and played her way passionately from round to round - to her greatest career success so far.
